Health Coaching for People with Autism

My background in Applied Drama spans 20 years and within that I have worked extensively with participants on the Autistic Spectrum. Often in Autism people are recommended on groups or courses they should join that will benefit them, such as taking part in my drama workshops which addressed developing inter-personal social communication skills for adults with Autistic Spectrum Conditions (ASC). This has been hugely of benefit for members of the community who struggled in the smallest social interactions and who were able to get up on a stage and perform in front of an audience after 10 weeks of sessions.

In Health Coaching for people with ASC it is a very different landscape. Anyone accessing Health Coaching must arrive ready for change and should not take part in Coaching just because they have been told by someone else that it will be of benefit to them. However… my experiences over the past several months of working with a wonderful client with ASC, and a late diagnosis, is that there is much positivity that can be achieved in the coaching alliance regardless of ‘readiness for change’.

I would like to share his feedback from his Health & Wellness Coaching sessions with me, to show that even when someone might not be ready for change that positive change may still take place when a personalised, holistic approach is used:

“Regarding my Health and Wellness sessions with Claire: the sessions were clearly a tailored support, exploring my resources and trying to identify potential sources of lacking, personal disadvantages and monitoring progress or struggles. Above all I did sense a real professional and passion, which undoubtedly built my feeling of safety and consequences fuelled my motivation.

One thing is pretty sure- that Claire managed to glue me in the ‘now’ during our sessions... which is very likely a real achievement with individuals on the Autistic spectrum. But… it is all about: trust- to gain, exposure of respect and appreciating different perspectives and resources.

She showed clear empathy by encouraging me to explore my ‘map of the world’ and adjusting to it.”
